Strawberry Crew!

Last week, my best friend since elementary school visited, and her mom got some berries. She froze them until she was ready to make a cake for her niece. I love getting these pics from friends of all their different creations

As for Mother's Day hours: Our goal is to be open on Sunday, and we plan to do so. We also strive to provide a quality picking experience for all, especially on a holiday weekend. We will walk the patch at closing on Saturday to evaluate everything, and will update our specific hours for Sunday, based on picking conditions then.

OPEN Thursday & Friday, May 8th & 9th, 9AM - 5PM!

All 61 rows have multiple baskets of ripe berries! Every row is 350 feet long, and the best berries are always towards the far ends of the rows. Pro tip: start on the back end of any row and fill your baskets as you walk towards the gate. This way you're walking the shortest distance with full baskets of berries

Shout out to my friend Heather for sending me pics of her freezer jam making process! It's so simple. If you don't have a hand mixer, a potato masher does the trick too! You can use bags as shown here for efficient storage or glass jars work too. I still eat more PB&J's than the average toddler, and this freezer jam is hard to beat! The recipe is super simple - it just calls for Pectin (pictured), strawberries, and sugar - no cooking involved. The recipe is written on the pectin container, but we double it and use 3.5 c berries, 1 1/3 c sugar, and 1/4 c of pectin. Just mash, stir, and done!

We're OPEN Wednesday, May 7th, 9AM - 5PM! The patch is full of ripe, sweet strawberries. I picked this basket in less than 10 minutes this evening. The rain is behind us; the patch is dry, and the weather looks beautiful for the next several days!

The greenhouse has a wonderful selection of flowers, vegetables, and herbs - perfect for Mother's Day.

My current top picks are shown here:

Vinca: best curb appeal, even during the hottest, driest part of the summer

Snapdragon: it's gorgeous (have you seen the ones by Pizza Hut in Smithfield?!)

Marigolds: best companion plant - they deter pests and attract beneficial insects

Zinnia: particularly prolific flower that stays in bloom all season long

Tomatoes: few things are better than a summertime BLT with homegrown tomatoes

Peppers: paired with those tomatoes makes an incredible salsa!

Several folks have asked which plants are deer resistant. While no plant is completely deer proof, universities such as NC State, Clemson, and Virginia Tech indicate that the following species are rarely damaged by deer: marigold, zinnia, polka-dot plant (hypoestes), dusty miller, verbena, wax begonia, basil, snapdragon, mint, alyssum, ageratum, and lavender. We currently have all these and more in stock at our greenhouse!

This heat has really ripened the berries up wonderfully and enhances the sweetness. The pickin' is easy! We will have pre-picked berries available on Friday. The Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor Truck will be here from 11AM - 3PM. Friday is an asynchronous day for IWCS students. Tell the kiddos to finish their work early & head over to grab some berries & ice cream! If strawberry pie is more your jam, head on over to Dardens Country Store for some delicious homemade pies with our freshly picked strawberries!

Looking ahead to this weekend: We're extending Saturday's open hours from 8AM to 6PM to provide ample opportunity to pick before the rain rolls in on Sunday. Due to the current forecast, we will be closed on Sunday, May 4th.
