We're jammin'

The patch is JAM packed with berries! My grandmother made nearly three dozen jars today from what we picked last night. Fantastic on waffles, but my favorite is the classic PB&J. She & my husband picked another four baskets tonight in no time. There aren't many times in one strawberry season when there are this many berries in the patch & the weather is this good to pick in. If you've been waiting for ideal picking conditions, now's a great time! We'll be OPEN Friday, April 29 & Saturday April 30th, 8AM - 6PM. We'll likely be open on Sunday too.

14489 Bethel Church Lane, Smithfield, VA 23430. $10/basket, cash or check on the honor system. Bedding plants also available in the greenhouse.

Quick Farm Update: Big thank you to everyone who came & picked berries today! Time to Plant a Garden

It was SO great to see so many of you this weekend at the greenhouse! The weather is perfect this week to plant a home garden. Whether it be a little spot in the back yard, a few raised beds, or even a container garden. We actually like to plant veggies & herbs right in our flower beds near our house - easy access!

The price of produce is going up at the grocery stores, but our prices are the same as last year, just $3 per 4 pack. Growing a garden will help save money while providing your family with healthy, delicious melons, herbs, & veggies. Our kids are more likely to eat a vegetable they've grown themselves.

Here's a few of the bedding plants we have available for your garden: yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, eggplant, tomatoes (over 20 different varieties), cantaloupe, watermelon, peppers (some are sweet, some are hot). We also have 13 different varieties of herbs available to create your own herb bowls: basil, catnip, peppermint, savory, chives, cilantro, spearmint, dill, marjoram, oregano, stevia, parsley, and thyme. You can mix and match any of the different plants to fill a flat for $25. There are 12 total four packs in a flat.

The greenhouse is open all week, 9AM - 5PM for bedding plants. We're at 14489 Bethel Church Lane, Smithfield, VA 23430. We accept cash or checks.

Although it's still early in the season, with this warm weather, more strawberries are continuing to ripen. We'll let you know as soon as we have enough to open the patch for picking.

Cover Crop

Each year, we plant a cover crop in the area where we had grown strawberries the season before.  The primary reason to plant a cover crop is to help restore and maintain the soil health and get it ready to plant with strawberries the following year.  This is a picture of our rye, where last season's strawberries were.  Cover crops improve the biodiversity in our strawberry patch - can you spot the ladybug?  Cover crops help aerate the soil and help rain go into the soil.  They reduce soil compaction and improve the structure and strength of the soil.  With our sandy land, it's especially important to plant cover crops to reduce soil erosion and to build organic matter.

Our first few red berries of the year!  There aren't quite enough REDy yet to open the patch, but we're getting closer to opening day :-)
