The kids' favorite job is sitting on the water wheel. Everyone in our family is right handed, so the left seat is the most coveted one, when they're planting. It’s important that each plant be planted at the correct depth and has good soil to root contact, which occasionally requires additional pinching and squeezing the soil around the plant. Which brings us to our final job, which is “the walk-behind.” While carrying an extra tray of plants, this person walks behind the tractor and ensures every.single.one. is planted correctly and any that are skipped by the planters are filled in. The quantity of work for the walk-behind is directly tied to the quality of the work of the planters. These kids get better and better every year! Once we've planted everything on the wheel, we load up everything again.
