June is upon us and we're still going strong here at Browder's Fresh Pickins! We have red, delicious berries available to pick this weekend! Lots of folks think of May as the month of strawberry picking. Really though, the season can be extended to a month before and several weeks after May when the weather cooperates and the plants are kept well picked. As a thank you to our customers and in an effort to keep the plants well picked, we'll be dropping the price by $1 for every week that we're able to stay open through the month of June. June 1st - June 7th, all u-pick strawberries are $14/basket. June 8th - 14, all u-pick strawberries are $13/basket, Week 3 = $12, etc. Last year we were able to stay open through June 19th, and we're hoping to repeat that this year. 🍓

Looking for something interesting to do in Smithfield while you're in the area picking berries? Check out St. Lukes, Virginia's oldest surviving church building. They offer hourly guided tours of the church building and 43-acre historic site, Thursday through Saturday. Tours begin in the Welcome Center’s store the “Old Brick Gift Shop” at the top of each hour. 📸 I was looking back through some old photos and found this gem from the first time we grew strawberries to sell at the Smithfield Farmer's Market. If you had have told me then that a decade later, we'd be planting 25 times that amount now, I would have laughed. Funny how things work out. We are SO thankful for every.single.one of you, whether you were with us when we were just starting out or if today was the first time you came & picked berries. We couldn't do it without you! ❤️

We had a fantastic day at the strawberry patch today! Huge thanks to everyone who came out to pick! The patch is currently picked out so we're going to give it a day to rejuvenate. Therefore, we'll be CLOSED on Sunday. We'll be open bright and early on Monday morning with lots of ripe strawberries!

 

Our zucchini & yellow squash is REALLY coming in well now! We planted it from seed on March 1st to have it ready as soon as possible, and it's going strong! Because none will get picked on Sunday, we'll have PLENTY come Monday. For anyone who picks a basket of strawberries, you get FREE pick-your-own zucchini & yellow squash! For every basket of strawberries you pick, you can pick 20 FREE zucchini or yellow squash, while supplies last. Grab some for neighbors, friends, and coworkers 😊

*Heads up, typically we have pre-picked strawberries available on weekdays. However, because Monday is a holiday, our regular weekday staff is off. Therefore, we will not have any pre-picked available on Monday, Memorial Day.

Looking to pick some berries for Memorial Day Weekend? It's a great time to make it happen! TONS of strawberries, zucchini, yellow squash, and onions too!

Today we had such a wonderful time reading to the littles during our story time while supporting our local library. Tomorrow, we're giving back to another community organization that's been near & dear to my heart since I was a kid. I was part of the handful of kiddos who attended the first summer camp at the YMCA in Smithfield. In college, I worked there as a summer camp counselor where I learned LOTS of "classroom" management skills prior to becoming a teacher upon graduation. Later, our kids did swimming lessons, summer camp and now before/after school there. The YMCA does a lot for our community and we're happy to be able to support them with $1 of every basket sold on Saturday going to support our local Y 😊

🍓🍓The picking conditions right now are awesome! I picked a basket today in 5 minutes. Towards the far ends of the Ruby June rows (around the middle of the patch) are really rocking & rolling!

Friday, we're supporting our local public library by donating a portion of sales. As a educator, I am passionate about literacy. As a parent, I am SO thankful for the weekly story times at our local library. So, we're sponsoring a special event on Friday, May 24th at 10AM. Bring your kiddos (of all ages) for a simple little story time at our strawberry patch. I checked out a few strawberry books from our library and we'll read a story or two together. All the Isle of Wight County Schools students are out of school Friday, so swing on by for a fun family activity! 😁

One of the best parts of having a strawberry patch is when old friends come visit. Jake's buddy John from Brunswick...going all the way back to pre-school came over with his brother Will, father Robert, and a good friend from college Ben. That was a really cool surprise - thank y'all for coming!

The picking conditions on Thursday will be phenomenal! Stock up ahead of the long weekend! The ripe berries are plentiful & the heat makes 'em sweet! Looking for a festive, patriotic, simple and delicious treat? Try these. Start with scrumptious freshly picked strawberries. Dip in white icing or melted white chocolate and finish them off with a quick dip into blue sprinkles - done! We recommend picking the "Ruby June" variety for this recipe. They're the largest of the 3 varieties and it's easy to keep the longer stem on - perfect for dipping!

It looks like a bit of a storm rolling through Thursday evening, so we're closing a couple hours earlier than we usually do on Thursday. Also, we're opening up an hour earlier than we typically do during the week. Early bird gets the worm!

Tuesday is a FANTASTIC day to come pick strawberries! The row middles are weed free plus the nice weather makes for a rather enjoyable picking experience. The Ruby Junes have bounced back, and the Sweet Charlies are plumping up well! The flavor is sweet as ever! Also, there's plenty of yellow squash, zucchini, and onions for all! Heads up, this will be the last week for the lettuce as it's winding down.
