Browder's Bouquet Garden is now open! We invite you to come pick your own flowers to create smiles for your friends and family at your home and work. The concept is simple, just pick as many flowers as you can hold in one hand for $13. We provide the clippers. We'll also provide a cup of water when you check out to transport your flowers home.
Our journey with cut flowers started in the early 2000's when Jake and I took a Floral Design class at Virginia Tech. In 2012, we grew flowers and created bouquets to sell at the Smithfield Farmer's Market. We had never tried a pick-your-own bouquet garden, so we're excited to welcome you to our farm to enjoy the experience. Come along this journey with us as we try out new things and learn a lot through trial and error together. 😊
You'll notice Browder's Bouquet Garden is the first thing on your left as you arrive, inside its own deer fence (where the overflow parking has been for the past several years). Clippers are located on a table, near the entrance of the flower garden. The vast majority of the garden is zinnias but you'll see several other species sprinkled in as well. As you can see in the photos, the eucalyptus, gladiolus, and celosia aren't quite ready to harvest yet, but there are plenty of others that are ready. The photos indicate where to cut the stem. The flowers have a better chance of staying fresh longer if you follow a few tips: 1. Harvest in the morning when the flowers are the most hydrated. 2. Strip leaves off the stem so that there are none below the waterline. 3. Ensure your vase at home is clean. 4. Change the water frequently.
Update on pick-your-own produce: Strawberry production fluctuates throughout the season in large part due to the weather. The strawberries continue to be in a lull. Even after a day of rest, the berries aren't currently plentiful, and if you choose to pick berries, it will definitely take longer to fill your basket. We will not have any pre-picked berries available. It's tough to say how long the lull will be. For the past several years, the strawberries have been in production through the first or second week of June, so we'll continue to update here on how the production is coming along in the next couple of weeks. Although the strawberries may be starting to wind down, we're transitioning into other produce. There are lots of u-pick yellow squash, zucchini, onions and sunflowers. Lastly, huge sale in the greenhouse - ALL bedding plants are $2 each, regardless of container size. (4-packs, 4-inch pots (annuals), square pots (perennials).
